Key takeaways from the COP29
|
The UN Global Compact, in partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN Climate Change (UNFCCC), hosted the 12th Annual High-Level Meeting of the Caring for Climate initiative at COP29 in Baku on 13 November. The event brought together senior leaders from business, finance, government, civil society and the United Nations to focus on advancing climate finance commitments to meet the urgency of the global climate agenda.

Latin American and Caribbean Companies Commit to Accelerating SDG Progress
|
More than 300 business leaders, Government representatives and regional stakeholders gathered in Asunción, Paraguay, for Forward Faster Now: Accelerating Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to drive private-sector action on the Sustainable Development Goals. With only 17% of SDG targets on track globally, the Forward Faster initiative challenges companies to commit to bold actions in areas like gender equality, climate action, living wages, sustainable finance and water resilience. Highlighting the urgency, UN Global Compact CEO Sanda Ojiambo emphasized that aligning business strategies with the SDGs is essential for a sustainable future.

Oceans 20 Communiqué
and its impact

As one of six co-conveners, the UN Global Compact released the inaugural Oceans 20 (O20) Communiqué, "Driving Economic Prosperity, Climate Action, and Security through Ocean Stewardship," urging G20 leaders to prioritize the ocean in climate, development and trade agendas. Representing a historic step in integrating ocean stewardship into G20 discussions, the Communiqué outlines six actionable recommendations across ten themes, including advancing a sustainable ocean economy, marine conservation, food security and increased ocean finance.

Sri Lanka advances decarbonization efforts with SBTi Forum
|
On 7 November, Global Compact Network Sri Lanka, in collaboration with UN Development Programme (UNDP) Sri Lanka, hosted an SBTi Forum to advance the nation’s decarbonization goals. The forum included a panel discussion, technical session and local case study presentations. Key takeaways emphasized the need for public transparency in greenhouse gas reduction disclosures, corporate commitments to science-based targets (SBTs) and strengthened decarbonization across supply chains through supplier engagement.

Exploring sustainability and polarization at Global Country Network Germany’s 2024 Annual Conference
|
UN Global Compact Network Germany held its 2024 Annual Conference on 5 November in Berlin. With nearly 250 in-person participants and over 400 virtual attendees from business, Government and sustainability sectors, the main conversation centered around whether sustainability is driving polarization and how it can remain a guiding principle. The discussions highlighted that sustainability is vital for long-term economic competitiveness. Better harmonized regulations, predictable frameworks and targeted incentives were identified as essential to scaling sustainable investments.

This annual meeting, part of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), gathers representatives from governments, NGOs and experts to discuss sustainable land management practices and collaborative solutions.
